I love travelling. Whether it is a family trip, a short weekend getaway, or a spiritual yatra, there is something special about leaving your daily routine behind and starting a new journey. But over the years, I have noticed one thing as a nutritionist. Many people spend weeks planning their yatra, booking tickets, packing clothes, and making travel arrangements, but very few think about preparing their body.

We often say that a spiritual journey is about faith, devotion, and connecting with something bigger than ourselves. That is absolutely true. But think about it for a moment. How can you enjoy that experience if you are tired, dehydrated, dizzy, or struggling with stomach issues?

Your body travels with you on every journey. If you take care of it, your yatra becomes much more comfortable and enjoyable.

A Lesson We Learn the Hard Way

Have you ever skipped breakfast before a long journey because you were running late?

Many of us have done that. We think we will eat something on the way. Then traffic happens. Food is not available where we expected. Suddenly it is afternoon and we are hungry, tired, and irritated.

Now imagine the same thing during a pilgrimage where you may have to walk for hours, climb steps, stand in long queues, or travel through difficult terrain.A simple meal eaten at the right time can make a huge difference.Food is not just about filling the stomach. It gives your body the energy needed to complete the journey.

Think of Your Body Like a Vehicle

Before a long road trip, we check fuel, tyres, and engine condition. Nobody would start a journey with an empty fuel tank.

The same rule applies to our body. When we eat nutritious food, we are filling our body's fuel tank. When we skip meals or depend only on fried snacks and sweets, the body does not get the fuel it needs.

For example, imagine two people starting the same yatra.

One person has eaten a balanced breakfast with poha, fruits, and curd. The other person only had tea. After a few hours of walking, who do you think will feel more energetic?

Small choices create big differences.

Why Energy Matters During a Yatra

Many spiritual destinations involve physical activity.

You may walk around a temple complex. You may climb hundreds of stairs. You may walk barefoot. You may travel for several hours without proper rest. All these activities require energy.

Foods like roti, rice, oats, fruits, and millets provide the body with energy. Protein-rich foods like dal, milk, curd, paneer, and legumes help keep you satisfied for longer.

Without proper nutrition, even a beautiful spiritual experience can become physically exhausting.

Water Is Just as Important as Food

  • One of the biggest mistakes people make during travel is not drinking enough water.
  • Sometimes people avoid water because they do not want frequent washroom breaks. Others simply forget.
  • I have seen people develop headaches, weakness, and dizziness during travel simply because they were dehydrated.Think about how a plant looks without water. The leaves begin to droop.
  • Our bodies also struggle when water intake is low.Keep a water bottle with you.Take small sips throughout the day.If the weather is hot, increase your fluid intake.
  • Something as simple as drinking enough water can improve your energy and comfort during the entire journey.

The Problem with Travel Junk Food

Travel often makes us reach for chips, soft drinks, sweets, and fried snacks.

There is nothing wrong with enjoying a treat occasionally. The problem comes when these become the main source of food during the trip.

For example, if breakfast is skipped, lunch is delayed, and you only eat chips and biscuits throughout the day, your body will not get the nutrients it needs.

Instead, carry simple snacks such as:

  • Roasted chana
  • Peanuts
  • Almonds
  • Raisins
  • Dates
  • Fruits like apples and bananas
  • Homemade sandwiches

These foods are easy to carry and help maintain energy levels.

Eating Can Also Be a Spiritual Practice

Most people think prayer and meditation are spiritual activities. But eating can also become a mindful experience.Think about how often we eat while scrolling on our phones or watching television.During a yatra, things can be different.Sit quietly.Eat slowly.Notice the taste and texture of the food.Feel grateful for the meal in front of you. This simple habit helps us become more aware and present.

Many spiritual traditions teach gratitude. A meal is a perfect opportunity to practice it.

Respect Local Food but Stay Balanced

One of the best parts of travelling is trying local food. Many pilgrimage sites offer traditional meals prepared with love and devotion. These meals often bring people together regardless of their background.Enjoy these experiences.

At the same time, avoid overeating.

Sometimes people eat large amounts simply because the food tastes good or because it is a special occasion.Eating too much can leave you feeling uncomfortable and sleepy. The goal is to enjoy the food while still feeling light and energetic.

If You Are Fasting

Many people fast during religious occasions.Fasting can be an important part of spiritual practice.

However, it is important to fast wisely. Before fasting, eat nourishing foods that provide lasting energy. After fasting, avoid immediately overeating fried or sugary foods.Start with water, fruits, or light meals and allow the body to adjust gradually.Remember that the purpose of fasting is not to punish the body but to develop discipline and awareness.

Your Spiritual Journey Starts Before You Leave Home

People often think their yatra begins when they reach the temple or holy place.

As a nutritionist, I see it differently.Your journey begins when you start taking care of yourself.

It begins when you choose a healthy breakfast. It begins when you fill your water bottle. It begins when you pack nutritious snacks. It begins when you prepare your body with the same dedication that you prepare your travel plans.

A spiritual journey is not just about reaching a destination. Its the experience along the way.

When your body feels strong, your mind stays focused. When your mind is calm, you can connect more deeply with the purpose of your journey. So before your next yatra, do not only think about what clothes to pack or which route to take.

Take a moment to think about what you will eat.Because sometimes the path to a meaningful spiritual experience begins with something very simple -a well-nourished body and a healthy plate.

And that is why your spiritual journey truly begins with what you eat.
